Poplar Bluff grade school hopes to inspire future leaders

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- A Poplar Bluff grade school launches a new program in hopes of inspiring kids to become good leaders.

Eugene Fields Elementary School is taking part in the "Leader in Me" program.

The program encourages teachers to focus on their students strengths and encourage them to develop good habits.

"We're looking at building 21st century skills with our students," said one educator. "They're going ot have to be problem solvers. They have to be risk takers. They have to be able to collaborate-there's not a single profession that I can think of where you don't have to collaborate with someone at some point or time and this initiative just transforms the whole building's culture so that the students are learning this at a very young age."

School leaders applied to take part in the leader in me program.

100-Mile Yard Sale weekend

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation is reminding everyone that visitors and residents will be out in full force along Route 25 Memorial Day weekend in search of bargains at the 100-Mile Yard Sale.

The Dexter Chamber of Commerce said the yard sale will stretch from Jackson to Kennett, Mo. You may already see some things set up, but the official event will be Thursday, May 23 through Monday, May 27.

"It's a fun weekend that people look forward to each year," said Traffic Engineer Craig Compas, "but we want people to remember that there's more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers need to keep that in mind."

MoDOT will do its part to bring the safety message to the forefront.  Message boards will be in place along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving.
