Route PP in Butler County to be reduced For pavement repairs

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Missouri Department of Transportation officials say Route PP in Butler County will be reduced to one lane starting Monday while crews perform pavement repairs. 

This section of road is located between Route 67 South and Route 60 West.

Crews say weather permitting, work will take place Monday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 15 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The work zone will be marked with signs.  Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

Police bust "shake and bake" meth lab strapped to motorcycle

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Poplar Bluff Police busted a "shake and bake" meth lab on the back of a motorcycle during a routine seat belt and insurance check.

Michael Hon, 33, of Poplar Bluff is charged with possession of a controlled substance, attempt to manufacture a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and several traffic violations.

Police were conducting a spot check for seat belts and liability insurance on South 5th Street and Cherry Street around 12:55 p.m.

Presentation on Civil War project scheduled at Cape River Heritage Museum

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University and Ellen Ryan, digital project manager at Kent Library, will talk on Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. about a grant-funded project currently underway to identify and digitize original documents and photographs from the Civil War period.

The presentation will be at the Cape River Heritage Museum at 538 Independence Street. The project, "Confluence and Crossroads: The Civil War in the American Heartland" is a collaborative effort between Kent Library’s Special Collections, the Center for Regional History and the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University, the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, and the Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

West Point candidate served in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- Nationwide, only 85 National
Guard candidates make it into the military academy at West Point.

One of those candidates
grew up in Missouri and served in a Poplar Bluff Guard unit.

Specialist Drake Mann, of
West Plains starts classes at the academy in July.

Mann joined the guard in
2008, and was assigned to the 205th military police battalion out of Poplar
Bluff.

A first sergeant with the
Poplar Bluff battalion talks about Mann.

"When I first met
him, I thought he was a good candidate for officer's candidate's school,"
said Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Ladyman. "I sent him to a future's leader's conference,
and they determined he meets the criteria for West Point.  That's when we tried to submit an
application, and he was accepted.

Last year, West Point
accepted only three cadets from the Missouri National Guard.

New hospital ahead of schedule in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- Construction crews working
on a new hospital in Poplar Bluff are a year ahead of schedule.

Hospital and community
leaders in Poplar Bluff showed up to watch a "topping out" ceremony today.

A "topping out"
is a ceremony when the last structural beam is put in place, painted white, and
signed.

A hospital CEO says the
new hospital will be a big leap forward for Poplar Bluff healthcare.

"I think the most
important thing, is, we'll be able to provide private rooms for our patients in
a very-very pleasing environment," said Charles Stewart, Market CEO,
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. "We'll have over 900 parking spaces
easily assessable from all parts of our community.  We think it's going to be an tremendous asset
to our entire region."

About five-hundred construction
workers continue to work on the hospital. Hospital officials say they still
plan to open the hospital early next year.

MoDOT offers land auctions online

MoDOT offers land auctions online

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is now offering several properties to bid for online.

According to a news release, the online auction begins Wednesday with four parcels of land for sale in Butler, Stoddard, Howell and Shannon Counties.  The properties are part of the 'Realty to Roads Program.'

"This process benefits taxpayers because the funds generated through the Realty to Roads program are dedicated to roadway improvements," she said. "Ridding of excess right of way also saves maintenance costs, reduces liability and puts the property back on the tax rolls to the advantage of local communities."
