Gov. Nixon encourages hunters to donate venison

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Gov. Jay Nixon visited the Harvesters Community Food Network on Tuesday to encourage local deer hunters to donate venison through the Share the Harvest program.

Share the Harvest is a partnership between the Conservation Federation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, local food banks and meat processors to provide venison donated by hunters and processors to families in need.

“For 20 seasons, Share the Harvest has been an important part of Missouri’s legacy of sportsmanship and conservation,” said Gov. Nixon. “Because of the hard work of the Conservation Federation, the Department of Conservation and partners like Harvesters, this year will be bigger than ever.

Heroin on the rise in Poplar Bluff

It comes hidden in little balloons or capsules that look like Benadryl, heroin - a drug so addictive it can get you hooked the first time. People in Poplar Bluff say they feel its presence as police say the drug is making a comeback.

Ron Smith tells us he watched two loved ones suffer from heroin addiction.

"I've had two different girlfriends on it," said Smith. "They both had all the reason in the world to try and live right but the drugs just take over and there's no beating it."

He says it's unreal what heroin can do to you.

"They wake up in the morning with one thing on their minds and that's getting high," said Smith.

Meanwhile, parents like Jesse Hicks say they are already concerned about the future if heroin takes hold.

"It just seems like it's hit this community hard," said Hicks.

Humane Society offers Halloween safety tips for pets

Humane Society offers Halloween safety tips for pets

(KFVS) - The Humane Society of Missouri has some tips to keep pets safe this Halloween.

Tips include:

  • Keep pets safely inside, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities to ensure they don't become frightened or feel threatened at the sight of noisy, costumed children
  • Cats, especially black ones, may be the target of pranksters. Black cat owners are advised to keep their cats safely indoors during the Halloween season
  • Frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion. Consider keeping your cat in a separate room with the door closed. For dogs, preventing access to the door can be as simple as keeping them attached to a leash, putting them in crates or confining them to another room with baby gates. Be sure all pets wear collars with ID tags in case of accidental escape.

Man killed in Poplar Bluff house fire

A 53-year-old Poplar Bluff man was killed in an early morning fire Friday.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers says David Buchanan most likely died of smoke inhalation in a fire that broke out around 3:50 a.m. Friday at 1401 N. 12th Street.

Buchanan was found in a back bedroom.

The State Fire Marshall is now investigating.

Fire Chief Ralph Stucker says the preliminary findings point to the fire being started accidentally.

It's believe it started somewhere in the kitchen.

"Nothing suspicious about it at all", said Chief Stucker.

A friend of the victim says she still can't believe what happened.

"I am sad, and heartbroken", said Helene Welsh.

Welsh said she helped care for Buchanan.

"He didn't really have anyone to help him," said Welsh.

Fire Chief Stucker says this is the second time the house has caught on fire within the last couple of years.
