Tagged smallmouth bass can lead to cash for anglers

Anglers on local rivers may be able to turn their smallmouth bass fishing hobby into cash.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is tagging legal sized smallmouth bass in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River and the North Fork of the White River.

Anglers who catch the tagged fish will receive a $25 or $75 reward after reporting their catch to MDC researchers.

Fisheries Management Biologist Paul Cieslewicz says the goal of this program is to help determine harvest regulations on the rivers in the future and maintain the high quality of smallmouth bass.

"The ultimate goal is to determine what percentage of smallmouth bass are being harvested by anglers," Cieslewicz said.  "What are they catching?  How many are the releasing?  It will help us manage fisheries."

Fish do not have to be kept to receive the reward.  Anglers may remove the tag and release the fish.

Tags must be returned to the MDC.

Families continue work to preserve old cemetery in Butler Co.

They call it sacred ground, and vow to continuing fighting to protect it.

Descendants of those buried at an old Butler County cemetery now look at legal action, hoping to preserve the land.

The Shadle Cemetery sits right where Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center wants to build a new hospital. According to a hospital spokesman, the hospital hopes to work toward a solution suitable to everyone.

Something happened recently at the cemetery, regarding the landowners, and now nerves are rattled again.

Charlie Smith thought things were looking up. The last word he got was everyone seemed on board with protecting Shadle Cemetery.

"We let our guard down, and we just got up here and this is what we found," said Charlie Smith.

Smith says the cemetery was recently surveyed. "Pretty much a blind man can see flags marking the area," said Smith.

Recently crews came through, ripping out trees.

Federal money to hire unemployed for storm, flood cleanup

After months of storms and floods in southeast Missouri, there's a silver lining to report.  Hundreds of people can get back to work, helping with the cleanup.

"It's going to be a shot in the arm for the economy," said Workforce Investment Board President June O'Dell of the Missouri Disaster Recovery Jobs Program.

O'Dell's agency is responsible for hiring, training, and paying eligible workers.  She says first in line will be those employees flooded out of work by rising rivers.

"Then we will go to the dislocated workers. And then, we will also work with the long term unemployed," she added.

As O'Dell lines out the workers, Scott Sattler lines up the work.

"This grant is available to any public entity which would be a city, a county, a village, a municipality, and also non-profit organizations that do humanitarian-type aid," Sattler explained.
