Three Rivers College advocates, staff honored at ACE Awards banquet

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Three Rivers College honored four advocates on Friday  at its annual “ACE Awards” banquet.

The banquet also honors faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves throughout the year.

According to the college, the “Vanguard” awards recognize individuals and groups external to the college whose outstanding contributions have helped the college achieve its vision of being the preeminent community of learners.

This year’s honorees were Zora Mulligan, Executive Director of the Missouri Community College Association; Danny Whiteley, Chief of the Poplar Bluff Police Department; Ben Traxel, architect and designer of the Academic Resource Commons renovation; and Allen Brooks, chairman of the Three Rivers Endowment Trust.

Route FF in Butler County closed for railroad crossing repairs

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Route FF in Butler County will be closed as Railroad crews perform railroad crossing repairs.

This section of roadway is located between McKinley Ave and Route 51.

Weather permitting, work will performed Thursday, May 1 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The work zone will be marked with signs.  Drivers are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - On Friday, April 26, Lake Road hosted a Missouri Assessment Program pep rally during which first and second graders rooted on third and fourth graders to do well on the state tests that are being taken this week at Poplar Bluff R-I’s elementary schools. 

Third graders who scored proficient or advanced on the MAP test last year, earned the opportunity to throw whipped cream pies at their teachers.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The American Red Cross is asking for blood donations this summer.

Red Cross officials say blood donations often decline during the summer, when schools are out and vacations are in.

The Red Cross encourages donors to make an appointment to give now.

Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards to create their own summer of stories.

The Red Cross says they serve about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

TCC students build fish tank computer for fun

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center students of Johnathan Martin’s computer maintenance class recently built a mineral oil fish tank computer, in which all the working parts were submerged in mineral oil rather than a CPU aluminum tower case.

According to Martin, there is no advantage to building this sort of computer other than it “looks cool.”

2 arrested in connection with Poplar Bluff shooting

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- Poplar Bluff Police have arrested two people in connection with a shooting late Sunday afternoon.

James A. Dorris, 37, from Lugoff, S.C., was charged with first degree assault (3 counts), armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child.

Heather Dorris, 36, also from Lugoff, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

According to Poplar Bluff police, the two traveled through Poplar Bluff from South Carolina on their way to Bunker, Mo. They were found and arrested in Bunker, Mo.

Police say after the broadcast of surveillance images of the suspect, they received several calls with information which helped identify the people traveling with the suspect and eventually the suspect himself.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department responded to the area of Business Highway 60 and Business Highway 67 in reference to shots fired at a vehicle late Sunday afternoon.
