Benefit for the restoration of stairway from depot to Main Street

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Altrusa International Inc. will host a Tables Scapes/Tea to benefit the restoration of the stairway from the Union Pacific Depot to Main Street on Saturday, September 10.

The event will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall located at 500 North Main in Poplar Bluff. The $10 tickets can be bought from any Poplar Bluff Altrusan or at the door.

The public is invited to come and vote for their favorite table.

"..And I Stood Still" gives tribute to 9/11 victims

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Center Stage theater production at Three Rivers College will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The college will present "..And I Stood Still," an original play written by director Tim Thompson, at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on September 11 at 2 p.m. Three Rivers says admission is free to the community, in memory of those who lost their lives.

Because seating is limited to 500 people, tickets will be required to enter and will be available at the door at no charge.

“Sept. 11, 2001, is a day that most Americans of a certain age will always remember,” said Thompson.  “Watching the (news) footage, I felt a need to write about the images I saw and what I imagined people across America were thinking and feeling.”

Thompson said he had the bulk of his play written in less than a week. A drama teacher at St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Mo.

Southeast Missouri State library conducts survey of original Civil War materials

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University's Kent Library will be conducting a survey of original Civil War materials.

Included in the survey will be materials held by libraries, museums, historic societies, genealogical societies, archives, individuals, State historic sites or other organizations and institutions.

According to Kent Library, the materials will include things like original letters, journals, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks artifacts and other things from that period.

Missouri counties in the survey include:

  • St.

Ceramic art on display at TRCC

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The work of a ceramic artist is on display right now at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff.

Anthony Borchardt's exhibit will be on display until September 23rd. Admission into the Tinnin Fine Arts Center art gallery is free. It's open noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Borchardt is a St. Louis native who started his career as a production potter in the crafts studios at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri.

Now, he is the ceramics instructor at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri. He'll give a free artist lectur on September 21st at noon in the Tinnin Center auditorium.

State Treasurer: Unclaimed property in Butler Co.

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced Monday he has returned $265,000 and $117,000 in unclaimed property to two women in the St. Louis area. Other unclaimed accounts include one in Butler County.

The $265,000 return was made up of 218 individual securities accounts. The $117,000 return was made up of 38 individual accounts including insurance, securities and uncashed checks.

Since January, Zweifel has returned more than $2.7 million in unclaimed property to individuals and businesses with claims more than $100,000. The Treasurer's office says there was no charge for the returns, and the identities of the recipients are being withheld for privacy reasons.

“Every account is important, and large or small, we are working hard each day to return this money as fast as possible,” said Treasurer Zweifel.

Lake Wappapello outdoor music theatre

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Lake Wappapello outdoor music theatre will have their next performance on Friday, August 12 at the Crabb and Co. Restaurant.

The performance will start at 6:30 p.m. and is free. Donations to the bands are appreciated.

You can bring a lawn chair and come out for a night of music.

The band will perform each Friday and Saturday night through October.

Ninth Annual Teamwork makes the Dream Work conference

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Ninth Annual Teamwork makes the Dream Work conference will be August 3 through 6 at the Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church.

The conference will include four days of preaching, teaching, singing and fellowship. Guest speakers include:

  • Pastor Marvin Sapp - Wednesday, Aug. 3
  • Pastor Jim Bakker - Thursday, Aug. 4
  • Pastor Marvin Winans - Friday, Aug. 5
  • Dr. Zachary Tim - Saturday, Aug. 6

Services will start at 7 p.m. and Saturday's culminating event will start 8 a.m. and include a full day of fellowship and festivities.

The Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church is located at 1875 Speedway Drive in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
