Clinic in Ark. to bring VA closer to home for rural veterans

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The John J. Pershing Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Poplar Bluff announced Tuesday a patient outreach clinic has been approved for Pocahontas, Ark.

According to the VAMC, the new facility will help provide high-quality health care to Veterans living in Pocahontas and the surrounding counties in northeastern Arkansas and southeastern Missouri. The outreach clinic will operate initially as a part-time facility, providing primary care and mental health services two days per week.  Services will be provided on station and through state-of-the-art telemedicine technology.

New Poplar Bluff hospital opens

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Black River Medical Center opened Monday, June 18 after successfully finishing the inspection by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services on Thursday.

Created through a partnership between Poplar Bluff Medical Partners and Saint Francis Healthcare System, Black River is a community-owned, not-for-profit hospital located at 217 Physicians Park Drive, off Highways PP and 67 on the Physicians Park campus. The three-bed hospital was designed by local physicians and offers Poplar Bluff residents a choice for inpatient hospitalization.

“We are thrilled to be opening. We have a group of very dedicated and talented people anxious to provide excellent care to our patients,” said Michael Burcham Sr., MBA, RRT, Black River Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer. “Black River Medical Center would not be possible without the vision of our community physicians and the support of Saint Francis Healthcare System.

Thursday is Flag Day. On June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag.

They decreed the first US flag have 13 stripes, alternate red and white; and, that the Union be "13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

Lt. Gov. Kinder accepting nominations for Mo. Veterans Service Award

(KFVS) - Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder is accepting nominations for the Lt. Governor’s Veterans Service Award, created to recognize Missouri veterans who provide volunteer service to their communities.

“Not only have Missouri veterans given service to their country, but every year many provide countless hours of service to their communities through their volunteer work,” Lt. Governor Kinder said. “This award provides an opportunity to recognize those efforts and honor our Missouri veterans.”

Kinder’s office will be accepting the nominations. The deadline to submit nominations is June 30, 2012. Each nominee will receive a certificate of recognition, which will note the nominating person or agency. Fifteen winners, selected from across the state, will be recognized and presented with an official Declaration from the Lieutenant Governor.
