The 5KFVS Run/Walk will be May 18 in downtown Cape Girardeau, Mo.

This year, to celebrate the 5th year, we're adding a 12K!

MoDOT to hold transportation listening session in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation has initiated a statewide engagement effort called "On the Move" to update Missouri's long-range transportation plan.

MoDOT is seeking direction from Missourians about transportation priorities across the state through a series of listening sessions, a mobile tour and virtual forums over the next several months.

As part of the effort, Tiffany Jenkins, director of marketing and public relations at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, will host a listening session from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. The session will be held at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center (Classroom 3), located at 3100 Oak Grove Road in Poplar Bluff.

Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 5 p.m.

SEMO Regional Water Safety Council to resume meeting on monthly basis

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The SEMO Regional Water Safety Council will resume meeting on a monthly basis beginning Tuesday, March 19 at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center located at Wappapello Lake.

These monthly meetings are held every third Tuesday, beginning at 10 a.m., from March through October. 

The purpose of the meetings is to share information and develop plans to enhance and promote safety in southeast Missouri as well as northeastern Arkansas. The council is a member of the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce and has a working relationship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake and Clearwater Lake, Wappapello State Park and the Water Patrol Division of the Missouri Highway Patrol. This partnership has proven to be very beneficial in establishing various safety initiatives.

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, working with the American Water Works Association, is accepting entries from Missouri fifth-grade students for the annual Drinking Water Week poster contest.

Drinking Water Week, May 5-11, 2013, recognizes the importance of safe, reliable water supplies to Missouri communities. In celebration of Drinking Water Week the Department of Natural Resources and the American Water Works Association are holding a poster contest for students in the fifth grade.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners: $300 for first place, and $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Contest entries should be postmarked by March 25, 2013.

The artwork size must be no larger than 11x17 inches. Each entry should have the student’s name, the teacher’s name and the school name, address and telephone number on the back. Students should also be sure to sign the front of the artwork.

525 Heartland students to compete in National History Day regional contest

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - About 525 area junior high and high school students are expected to compete in the National History Day in Missouri regional contest March 15 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Students from Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Iron, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, Washington and Wayne counties will compete for the chance to advance to the state National History Day competition at the University of Missouri April 20.

Three Rivers instructor wins award for excellence in teaching

Three Rivers instructor wins award for excellence in teaching

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  Three Rivers Community College recently awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award.

This year's recipient is Paulette Alexander, Instructor of Nursing at Three Rivers College.

Mrs. Alexander was awarded the Missouri Community College Association's "Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching" for her 24 years of outstanding service to the college.

In addition to her duties as an instructor, Mrs. Alexander also serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Community Health Education, and the Board of Directors for the SEMO Area Health Education Center.
