Technical Career Center students qualify for state competition

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  Dozens of high-schoolers and adults who attend Technical Career Center courses in Poplar Bluff recently competed in the Skills USA district contest.

Below is the complete list of PBTCC winners from the contest. The students who finished with the gold or silver in their respective skill contest will move on to the state competition April 4-6 at Linn State Technical College.

The bronze winners of the tech info written test will also advance to states.

Non-profit Alliance meeting Feb. 15 in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A non-profit Alliance meeting will be Friday, February 15 at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

At the meeting, they will be welcoming Kirby Burkholder, executive director of IFF. He will discuss how organizations looking to develop new location or expand their current operations can take advantage of IFF's services.

IFF is a non-profit lender and real estate consultant dedicated to working with organizations that serve low-income and special needs populations across Missouri. They support organizations in Missouri by providing solutions to their facility needs.

A.L.I.C.E. returning to Poplar Bluff schools

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - An Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate training seminar for certified elementary staff of Poplar Bluff schools will be offered Friday, February 15 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The A.L.I.C.E. training was last offered for R-I teachers over the higher grade levels on Nov. 21. It will be hosted by Lt. Kenny Mayberry and Sgt. Tom Bradley of the Southeast Missouir State University Department of Public Safety at the Kay M. Porter Theater.

American Red Cross aids nearly 400 in Southeast Missouri area

(KFVS) - The Southern Missouri Region of the American Red Cross says they helped nearly 400 individuals across many of the counties in its 40-county service area from the end of December through January.

The Red Cross says there were three fatalities as a result of house fires with more than 80 incidents of fire and storm damage in January alone. Red Cross provided assistance with funeral costs in the three deaths. At least 16 different families of six or more were helped including one family of 11 in the household.

According to the Red Cross, individuals had insurance on their property in only about 30 percent of the cases.

'Show Me Whatcha Got' holds last audition taping session

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Local performers looking to compete in this year’s “Show Me Whatcha Got” talent show will have one last chance to get their audition performances taped, when the show holds its final audition recording session on February 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Tinnin Center.

Potential contestants may attend anytime from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no appointment necessary.

During the session, competition hopefuls who are unable to submit their audition tapes online will have the opportunity to have their performances recorded for submission to the talent show’s production staff.

While this is the last recording session, “Show Me Whatcha Got” will continue to accept online submissions until Feb. 21.

5th grade students invited to enter Earth Day 2013 slogan contest

(KFVS) - Missouri’s fifth-grade students are known to have lots of energy, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking to tap that energy to provide ideas for the Earth Day 2013 slogan.

The Department of Natural Resources is once again sponsoring a slogan contest for Missouri fifth-grade students. Students are asked to create their slogan ideas based on the theme “Energy Efficiency.” The student submitting the winning entry will be honored at the Earth Day 2013 celebration, April 19 at the Capitol in Jefferson City.

Deadline for the slogan contest is Feb. 28. The winners will be announced in March.

Aaron Tippin to perform at 'Valentines For Veterans' concert Feb. 15

 

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff has revealed that country music artist, Aaron Tippin will be the featured entertainer at next year’s Third Annual “Valentines For Veterans” Concert. 

The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

Tippin’s hits include ''My Blue Angel,'' ''That's As Close As I'll Get to Loving You,'' and ''I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way.'' He boasts five certified gold albums, one platinum, and three number-one hits.

Tippin has crusaded for the working man and woman since he took country music by storm in 1990 with his uncompromising “You’ve Got to Stand for Something.”
