World Autism Awareness Month: Brandon's story | Families
POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - With April being World Autism Awareness Month we asked viewers to share their stories of friends or loved ones with autism.
This is the story of Kelly and Donna Zitnak and their nine-year-old son Brandon. He also has three siblings: Skyler, Candice and Montana.
Brandon loves to play basketball with his Dad and brother. He likes to mix ingredients when Mom is cooking dinner, and enjoys playing with is little sister. He is very good at video games and finding his way around on the computer. He struggles day to day socially with his peers, but still manages to retain friends.
Somedays he comes home from school gloomy and sad with a feeling that he has no friends. I have a dream of one day being able to go to the schools and speak about Autism and how to befriend a child who is on the spectrum.
Living with Autism has not been easy, but tell me, what in life is? Our son has taught us to slow down and be patient. To enjoy life as it comes each day. His disabilities are not understood by all, but if people would simply look beyond those, they would see this sweet, caring, young man whose only desire is to be happy and to be loved. He wants people to laugh WITH HIM, not at him.
Those on the spectrum are very much like everyone else in a sense, just not able to express it the way we do. The challenges we face everyday teach us to be stronger and to pull together as a family.
