Red Cross urges blood, platelet donations after winter storm cancels blood drives

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross says the severe winter weather last week forced the cancellation of around 20 American Red Cross blood drives, resulting in a shortfall of more than 1,200 blood and platelet donations through the region.

Now that the storm has passed, eligible donors are encouraged to donate to help offset the current shortfall and ensure a stable supply.

“While inclement winter weather can hinder blood and platelet donations, patients’ needs for these lifesaving blood products is constant.” said Scott Caswell, CEO of the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “Now that the severe weather has subsided, we encourage eligible donors to give and help ensure patients’ needs continue to be met.”

According to the Red Cross, all blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. Platelets are also in great need as they have a shelf life of just five days and must be replenished regularly.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  March is Red Cross Month.

March was first proclaimed Red Cross Month in 1943 by former President Franklin Roosevelt. Since then, every president, including President Barack Obama, has designated March as Red Cross Month. The Red Cross has been helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies for more than 130 years.

Since World War II, the Red Cross has been meeting the needs of patients throughout the U.S. and today partners with more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers, providing blood products and specialized laboratory services. From cancer patients and accident victims to premature babies and those with blood disorders, someone needs blood every two seconds.

The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive on March 1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Poplar Bluff High School at 1300 Victory Lane in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center reminds patients and community members that the Green Environmental Management System – or “GEMS” is the process used at the medical center to maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.

The GEMS program evaluates the potential impact of all facility activities to human health or the environment, and helps ensure the VA makes environmentally-sound decisions.

The GEMS Coordinator for the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center is Jim Vail.

Exercising the brain: Educators work to improve grades through physical activity

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Researchers studying the relationship between good health and academic success continue to fund projects Poplar Bluff R-I educators are coming up with to increase the physical activity of students.

The Healthy Living Club at Poplar Bluff High School was awarded $2,500 this month, its second grant through Healthier MO Communities, so club sponsors can purchase additional exercise equipment and bring in more specialists like dietitians.

The partnership between the school district and Healthier MO began last school year as a pilot program for establishing best practices to implement in schools within the coalition’s service area.

Patients moved into Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - After months of planning, Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center moved 99 patients in just 4 hours Saturday morning into their new facility with no complications.

They had 10 different EMS units with 20 ambulances and others assisting.

The older facility will still have two services that will remain, the cancer center and the fitness center.

The seven story $173 million facility has 250 patient rooms, and emergency room, cardiac care, and will offer neurosurgery.

Cape Girardeau hospital forms partership in Poplar Bluff

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - SoutheastHEALTH based in Cape Girardeau has formed a new partnership in Poplar Bluff.

SoutheastHEALTH officials say the hospital has partnered with Advanced Healthcare Management Services, LLC, based in Poplar Bluff effective January 1, 2013.

SoutheastHEALTH has agreed to buy all of the physical assets and assumed management responsibilities for Advanced’s entities which include Advanced Healthcare Medical Center in Ellington, rural healthcare clinics in Ellington, Poplar Bluff, Doniphan and Van Buren, and a 35,000 square foot medical office building housing several practices in Poplar Bluff.
