Junior Beta Club supports depot steps restoration

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - On Wednesday, May 15, the Poplar Bluff Junior Beta Club donated $730 to the Poplar Bluff Historic Depot Restoration Corporation to go toward the grand staircase restoration.

The Depot Steps Committee has less than $17,000 left to raise by Saturday, June 1, in order to match the $250,000 transportation enhancement grant approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation. 

Constructed in 1910, the Depot—located at the south end of Main Street in downtown Poplar Bluff—is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Poplar Bluff grade school hopes to inspire future leaders

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- A Poplar Bluff grade school launches a new program in hopes of inspiring kids to become good leaders.

Eugene Fields Elementary School is taking part in the "Leader in Me" program.

The program encourages teachers to focus on their students strengths and encourage them to develop good habits.

"We're looking at building 21st century skills with our students," said one educator. "They're going ot have to be problem solvers. They have to be risk takers. They have to be able to collaborate-there's not a single profession that I can think of where you don't have to collaborate with someone at some point or time and this initiative just transforms the whole building's culture so that the students are learning this at a very young age."

1 dead in Kennett crash on US 412

KENNETT, MO (KFVS)- A Cardwell, Mo. woman is dead after a wreck at the corner of US 412 and South Anthony in front of Barton's.

As of right now, the area known as the South Bypass is closed. Police barricades are up at Wal-Mart and Kennett Street.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday Katherine E. Sessums, 48, was driving a 2008 Ford Ranger eastbound on US 412 when the truck crossed the center line and hit a 2007 Western Star Tractor driven by Steven M. Copeland, 49, from Poplar Bluff.

The Highway Patrol says the truck overturned and Sessums was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gov. Nixon proclaims May 18 National Kids to Parks Day

(KFVS) - Gov. Jay Nixon has proclaimed May 18 as National Kids to Parks Day in the state and encouraged Missourians of all ages to get outside and enjoy our state and local parks.

This national event is sponsored by the National Park Trust and endorsed by Missouri State Parks.

“Whether visiting a local municipal park or one of our state parks and historic sites, the opportunities for enjoying nature are nearly endless,” Gov. Nixon said. “Participating in activities at our parks, from hiking to fishing, create meaningful family memories that contribute to a life-long appreciation of the outdoors.”

Gov. Nixon created the Children in Nature Challenge to encourage activities that introduce children to nature year round. Communities and families can participate in the challenge and learn more at childreninnature.mo.gov.

Former Poplar Bluff pastor accused of sexual misconduct

MALDEN, MO (KFVS)- The Dunklin County Prosecutor's office charged a former pastor in Poplar Bluff with two counts of sexual misconduct in the 2nd degree.

According to the probable cause statement, a woman reported to the Malden Police Department that she was walking and was stopped by a white male driving a red vehicle. The woman told police the man asked her for directions to Wal-Mart and as she approached him, she noticed he was fondling himself. The woman also state that it appeared that he had his phone out and pointing it at her as if he was using the camera to record her.

Poplar Bluff woman dies after crash near Malden

MALDEN, MO (KFVS)- A Poplar Bluff woman died after she was involved in a crash Sunday in Dunklin County.

Rebecca S. Berry, 31, of Poplar Bluff died after she was injured in a crash Sunday around 5 a.m. near Malden.

It happened on four miles west of Malden on Route MM.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Berry was driving a 2004 Chevy Tracker northbound on Route MM when a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 43-year-old Douglas R. Stinson of Malden crossed the centerline and hit Berry's vehicle head on.

Berry was air-lifted to Saint Francis Medical Center, then to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis where she later died.

Two passengers in Berry's vehicle, a 10-year-old girl and a 38-year-old man, had serious injuries. The girl was air-lifted to Lebonheur's Children's Hospital in Memphis. The man was taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

MoDOT Southeast Dist. properties currently reduced in price

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation Southeast District has parcels currently for sale.

According to MoDOT, prices were recently reduced for properties located on Route 60 in Stoddard County, Route PP in Butler County and Route 74 in Cape Girardeau County.
