POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS)- A Heartland couple is back home after being stranded aboard a disabled Carnival Cruise Ship.

John and Debra MacDonald were one day away from getting off the ship when the problems started.

"Beyond anything you can imagine," Debra MacDonald said.

An engine room fire left the ship dead in the water.

With raw sewage everywhere, the couple won't likely ever forget the smell on that ship.

"We booked a four-day cruise and we were on it eight," said John MacDonald.

"Once we finally got here it was heaven," said Debra MacDonald.

However, they do say the staff on board did everything they could to control the chaos.

As compensation, carnival offered each passenger $500, a free flight home, a full refund for the trip and for most expenses incurred onboard along with credit for another cruise.
