U.S. Coast Guard offers boating safety tips for hunters

(KFVS) - The United States Coast Guard is offering boating safety tips for hunters.

The Coast Guard says capsizing and falling overboard into cold water are major hazards for hunters. During hunting seasons, most waters are cold enough for a serious hypothermia threat.

They say responsible hunters need to be aware of the dangers and follow a few simple rules to make hunting on the water safer and more enjoyable. The tips include:

  • Leave a float plan with someone at home, describing where you are going, who you are with and when you expect to return.
  • Transport firearms to the boat unloaded, cased, muzzle first, with the action open.
  • Always wear an approved and properly fitted life jacket when in a boat.
  • Carry a throwable flotation device in case someone falls overboard.
  • Stow visual distress signals on board.
  • Know the weather forecast for the area. High winds can be dangerous.

Briggs & Stratton announces more than 200 layoffs

Lawn and garden engine manufacturer Briggs & Stratton announced the company is laying off 202 employees.

According to a released from the company, 92 seasonal employees and 110 full and part-time employees will be laid off beginning October 14.

Briggs & Stratton manufactures small engines for the outdoor power equipment industry.

The company cites the economy and seasonal nature of the business for reasons for the cuts.

Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce Director Steve Halter says while the loss of jobs is a blow to the city, the unemployment rate in Butler County is still around 8 percent.  The state average is 8.8 percent for the month of August, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

The company laid off 114 employees in 2009.  The company cited softer demand for lawn and garden equipment two years ago.

Poplar Bluff man retires after nearly 70 years on the job

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A Poplar Bluff man worked his last day at Riggs in Poplar Bluff after nearly 7-decades on the job.

U.L. Smith started working at Riggs as a high school student 69-years-ago.

He says the fact that he doesn't have to go to work tomorrow hasn't sunk in yet, but he'll find something else to do with all of his free time.

Smith says the hardware business is in his blood, and never considered working anywhere else after all those years because of the people he dealt with on a daily basis.

“Meeting the people has been the most successful part of my business,” said Smith. “That’s what I’ve made my life with is people. But, I’ve tried to take care of myself, tried to treat the people like I want to be treated and so far it’s worked out good for me.”

Congratulations, Mr. Smith, you've earned some time off!

Schools can still sign up for "Battle of the Belt"

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Battle of the Belt, a high school seat belt challenge, offers musical incentives as rewards this year to area schools that sign up to be a part of the challenge.

Ford Driving Skills For Life has donated $20,000 worth of iTunes cards as rewards through a grant provided by the Governors Highways Safety Association.

"Battle of the Belt is a fun and creative way to help teens learn the importance of making it click," said Leanna Depue, chair of executive committee of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. "It is unique because teens survey their peers and provide activities that reinforce how seat belts save lives."

MoDOT says according to a 2011 survey, only 67 percent of Missouri teens buckle up compared with 79 percent of Missourians and 85 percent of people across the state.

"Show Me My Buzz" app now available for iPhone

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation's new smartphone app to help people make smart choices about designating a sober driver is now available in the Apple App Store.

The "Show Me the Buzz" free app is now available in the Apple App Store and the Google Market. It allows users to calculate their estimated blood-alcohol concentration based on how many drinks they've had, how long they've been drinking and their gender.

“Drinking and driving is always a bad decision because even a small amount of alcohol affects your reflexes,” said Don Hillis, MoDOT’s assistant chief engineer.
