(KFVS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is currently seeking someone who is interested in a Student Conservation Association Public Safety Internship position for summer employment.

SCA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. The SCA Public Safety Intern will work under the supervision of USACE park rangers and they work together to encourage public safety to those who are recreating on USACE-managed public lands and waters.

The SCA Public Safety Intern will primarily be promoting boating and water safety with an emphasis on communicating that to the highest risk group of 18-35 year old males. Training in boating and water safety interpretation/education will be provided.

Public Water Supply Dist. #4 boil order cancelled

Public Water Supply Dist. #4 boil order cancelled

WAPPAPELLO, MO (KFVS)- The boil water order for Public Water Supply Dist. #4 has been cancelled.

The district was scheduled to shut down water lines on Monday for maintenance.

A leaky 8" water main prompted the boil water order. Crews were able to repair the line without shutting off the main.

Ellington Student wins national scholarship award

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Erica Chitwood, an Ellington native and sophomore at Three Rivers Community College, has been selected as a 2013 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar for Missouri.

The award is given by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the Phi Theta Kappa honor society for outstanding academic success, community service, and leadership skills.

“We’re so proud that Erica was chosen as the Bronze Scholar for Missouri,” said Dr. Mairead Ryan-Anderson, faculty advisor for Phi Theta Kappa at Three Rivers. “She’s done an outstanding job during her time at Three Rivers, and this is a wonderful recognition of her hard work and talent.”

Each participating community college is only allowed to submit two nominations for the Coca-Cola Community College Academic team per year, with one bronze, silver, and gold scholar chosen per state.

Poplar Bluff VA to notify veterans affected by records discovery

POPLAR BLUFF, MO  (KFVS) -  The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff is offering free credit monitoring for up to 589 Veterans whose personal information, including social security numbers, was discovered in a box that had been in an unoccupied storage room from December 2011 to its discovery this week.  

VA places the highest priority on safeguarding the personal information of our Veterans,” said Medical Center Director and CEO, Marj Hedstrom. “When an incident such as this is discovered, we will immediately take prompt remedial action such as notification – even if the risk to Veterans is very slight.” 

Though there is no indication the information was accessed or used by unauthorized persons, the medical center is taking no chances.

(KFVS) - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded several contracts for Southeast District projects during its regular meeting on April 3.

Awarded contracts include construction of a bridge, several asphalt overlays and pavement repairs. Contracts include the following:

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Mission of Mercy will host a large-scale dental clinic May 3-4 at the Show Me Center.

The clinic will provide free oral healthcare to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford care. Doors open at 5 a.m. Organizers say you can arrive early as the clinic is first come, first serve until they reach capacity. It is open to both adults and children, but no child care will be available.

MOMOM says to expect a long day. Dental services offered will include cleanings, fillings and extractions. They say they will not provide crowns, bridges or dentures.

Route 158 in Butler County to close for bridge construction

Route 158 in Butler County to close for bridge construction

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -  Route 158 in Butler County will be closed as contractor crews set girders for new bridge on Route 67.

The bridge is located between County Road 343 and Route 67.

Weather permitting, work will be performed Tuesday, April 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The work zone will be marked with signs.

Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.
