Three Rivers instructor wins award for excellence in teaching

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  Three Rivers Community College recently awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award.

This year's recipient is Paulette Alexander, Instructor of Nursing at Three Rivers College.

Mrs. Alexander was awarded the Missouri Community College Association's "Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching" for her 24 years of outstanding service to the college.

In addition to her duties as an instructor, Mrs. Alexander also serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Community Health Education, and the Board of Directors for the SEMO Area Health Education Center.

TRCC Honor Society inaugurates new leadership

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  The Three Rivers College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa elected it's new officers at the March meeting.

Kalie Clayton was elected as President. Sue Fowler was elected Vice President. Kenneth Swopes was elected Secretary.

The honor society dedicates itself to recognizing and encouraging the academic achievement of two-year college students, and provides leadership and service opportunities for its members.

NASA specialist visits Poplar Bluff school

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Students in Poplar Bluff got a lesson on space food on Thursday.

John Weis, National Aeronautics and Space Administration education specialist over the aerospace education services project, visits Oak Grove Elementary School on Thursday, Feb. 28, to teach fourth graders about space food.

Weis, who is based out of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, later presented to students at the 5th and 6th Grade Center before putting on a workshop for area teachers at Three Rivers College.

Doniphan woman wins $1,000 Loughead scholarship from TRCC

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Three Rivers Community College Foundation has named Natalie Nacole Killian, from Doniphan, as the first recipient of the $1,000 M.E.L. Scholarship, named for Mary E. Loughead, from Poplar Bluff.

Killian, 33, is an elementary education major at Three Rivers College. She is the mother of two and a 1998 graduate of Sikeston High School. She is married to Darren W. Killian, from Doniphan, an agent for the state Department of Conservation.

Killian at first had planned a career in nursing.

“However, after being around my two children and watching them grow, I found a new passion . . . loving kids and preparing them for their future,” she wrote in her letter of application for the scholarship.

She works as an Ambassador and Peer Mentor for Student Support Services at Three Rivers; she is active in Parent-Teacher Organizations, serves as a Boy Scouts Tiger Scout leader and is a member of the Doniphan Church of God.

Aaron Tippin to perform at 'Valentines For Veterans' concert Feb. 15

 

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff has revealed that country music artist, Aaron Tippin will be the featured entertainer at next year’s Third Annual “Valentines For Veterans” Concert. 

The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

Tippin’s hits include ''My Blue Angel,'' ''That's As Close As I'll Get to Loving You,'' and ''I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way.'' He boasts five certified gold albums, one platinum, and three number-one hits.

Tippin has crusaded for the working man and woman since he took country music by storm in 1990 with his uncompromising “You’ve Got to Stand for Something.”
