Beta Club honored for continual Animal Shelter support

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Poplar Bluff High School Beta Club was presented a plaque Tuesday, February 26, on behalf of the Poplar Bluff Animal Control Division for making a large donation of pet supplies to the city’s Animal Shelter.

An annual tradition, the Beta Club donates items such as pet food, litter, toys, treats and newspapers to the Animal Shelter as a service project at the beginning of each year.

Missouri ranks 4th in the nation for dog ownership

(KFVS) - The American Veterinary Medical Association recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Missouri ranks fourth for dog ownership with 45.9 percent of households owning a dog.

The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on Dec. 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont - 70.8 percent
  • New Mexico - 67.6 percent
  • South Dakota - 65.6 percent
  • Oregon - 63.6 percent
  • Maine - 62.9 percent
  • Washington - 62.7 percent
  • Arkansas - 62.4 percent
  • West Virginia - 62.1 percent
  • Idaho - 62 percent
  • Wyoming - 61.8 percent

AWA hosts 'Howl at the Moon' benefit party

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  The Animal Welfare Alliance will hold its 4th Annual “Howling at the Moon” party on Friday, November 2, at the Westwood Center in Poplar Bluff.

The event  will start at 6 p.m. and last until 10:30 p.m.

 “We’re excited about moving to the Westwood Center. It’s a beautiful location with plenty of parking,” said Julie Hudson, an AWA board member who is chairing this year’s event. “Everything else will be the same as before: a full meal catered by Maya’s; great live music by the Thin Blue Line band; free drinks; dancing; a silent auction -- all for just $30 per person. It’s the best party in town,” she said.

AWA recently purchased a site just north of Poplar Bluff on which to build a no-kill animal shelter.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Pet Breeders Association, along with the American Canine Association will hold an Independence Day Dog Show and Seminar June 29-30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The show will be at the American Legion Building on Highway PP in Poplar Bluff, Mo. You can take Highway 67 by-pass to PP Highway Exit (turn east onto PP). Look for signs on south side of road, the show is located behind the Ozark Flooring Stores.

Police say when temperatures and heat soar, pet owners are advised to take special precautions to keep pets safe. High temperatures can be deadly for pets left without a cool, shady place to rest and plenty of water.
