Mo. State Parks welcome dog owners to stay the night

(KFVS) - Missouri State Parks announced recently starting in January 2012 they will make lodging units available to people traveling with their dogs.

The new Cabins for Canines program includes outpost cabins, camper cabins, yurts, single-unit cabins, fourplexes and duplexes. Previously, pets were not allowed in any state park buildings including lodging units.

"A portion of our lodging units will be available to dog owners and a portion will remain canine-free, giving us a balance to accommodate everyone who wants to come to a state park," said Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks, a division of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Cabins for Canines program will begin Jan. 1, 2012, for state-operated facilities including outpost cabins, camper cabins and yurts. For lodging facilities operated by private concessionaires, the program will be phased in during 2012 based on availability and fully implemented in 2013.

$1,300 from dissolved humane society donated to AWA

$1,300 from dissolved humane society donated to AWA

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Animal Welfare Alliance announced Tuesday that $1,300 has been donated to them from the former Ozark Foothills Humane Society.

When the humane society was founded more than a decade ago, the intention of the members was to improve the lot of homeless dogs and cats in the Poplar Bluff area. But some problems caused the group to disband in the 2000s, according to Bob Crawford, one of the founders.

Crawford, owner of Crawford Security Co. in Poplar Bluff, said he was unaware that an account containing some donations to the group had been sitting in a local bank since then. When the bank told him recently about the situation, he decided to donate the $1,300 in the account to the AWA.

“These dollars were donated by people who wanted to help animals in this area. So I thought giving it to a local group working toward the same goal was the right thing to do,” said Crawford.

Humane Society offers Halloween safety tips for pets

Humane Society offers Halloween safety tips for pets

(KFVS) - The Humane Society of Missouri has some tips to keep pets safe this Halloween.

Tips include:

  • Keep pets safely inside, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities to ensure they don't become frightened or feel threatened at the sight of noisy, costumed children
  • Cats, especially black ones, may be the target of pranksters. Black cat owners are advised to keep their cats safely indoors during the Halloween season
  • Frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion. Consider keeping your cat in a separate room with the door closed. For dogs, preventing access to the door can be as simple as keeping them attached to a leash, putting them in crates or confining them to another room with baby gates. Be sure all pets wear collars with ID tags in case of accidental escape.
