Missouri 8th District candidates answer questions

MISSOURI (KFVS)- The special election to fill the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 8th district is just about a month away on June 4.

Missouri voters will choose someone to fill the seat Rep. JoAnn Emerson vacated.

Steve Hodges is the Democrat candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since elected in 2006, serving Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties.

Jason Smith is the Republican candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since voters elected him in 2005 and serves Crawford, Dent, Phelps and Reynolds counties.

Bill Slantz is the Libertarian candidate, and founded his own consulting company.

Doug Enyart is the Constitution Party candidate and founded his company in forestry consulting.

Heartland News sat down with each one and asked a few questions.

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is providing Missourians a financial “spring cleaning” checklist.

Zweifel says he hopes Missourians will use to keep their finances in order and their property from becoming unclaimed property.

“There are a few simple steps each of us can take on a regular basis to keep our records up-to-date and our estates in order,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “It is important that we check on our accounts, safe deposit boxes, life insurance policies and wills. By making sure that our contact information is correct, our fees are paid up and changes made, Missourians can help keep their property where it belongs and avoid having to file Unclaimed Property claims to get it back.”

Here are a few “spring cleaning” tips for your finances from Zweifel:

1.      Make sure your bank has your current information. If you have moved or changed your name, be sure to inform your bank.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Poplar Bluff school officials recently met at the Missouri Capitol with lawmakers to discuss funding for career and technical education.

Missouri Center for Career Education Region 7 grant coordinator Camille MacDonald, Poplar Bluff High School Agriculture Education instructor Charles Kinsey and Technical Career Center Director Jean Winston met with Rep. Todd Richardson and Sen. Doug Libla,  each of Poplar Bluff, on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Missouri Capitol.

The purpose of the visit was to promote career and technical education and discuss a bill coming before Congress involving continued funding.

Todd Richardson announces bid for Congress

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Second term State Representative from Poplar Bluff, Todd Richardson, announced Friday he is formally seeking the nomination for Missouri's 8th Congressional District.

This announcement comes after announcing his intention to explore the option last month.

“After spending the last few weeks traveling around southeast Missouri and meeting with members of the 8th District Congressional Committee, I have been encouraged by the support I have been receiving," Richardson said. "My wife Amber and I thought long and prayed hard about this decision and we are proud to announce that I am seeking the nomination."

Todd continued, “I have spent the last month talking with family, friends and constituents about this decision. After traveling the district and meeting with dozens of committee members, I have been honored and humbled by the level of support I have received.”

State senators discuss higher education at Three Rivers College

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Several Missouri state senators visited Three Rivers College Tuesday.

The meeting was held Tuesday, December 11th, at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff.

The meeting is part of an effort to improve the quality of higher education in Missouri.

Sen. Doug Libla, 25th District; Sen. Ron Richard, 32nd District; Sen. Jay Wasson, 20th District; Sen. Mike Cunningham, 33rd District; and Sen. Wayne Wallingford, 27th District. Attending from Three Rivers were Dr. Devin Stephenson, President; Dr. Wesley Payne, Vice President for Learning; Dr. Angela Totty, Vice President for Student Success; Ms. Charlotte Eubank, CFO; and Trustees Randy Winston and Wilbur Thornton attended the meeting.

The group held a round table discussion about the legislative challenges facing Three Rivers and higher education in Missouri.

Missouri voters to decide on tobacco tax hike

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-

Missouri voters will be asked to raise the state's tobacco tax by passing Proposition B when they head to the polls Tuesday.
Currently, Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax in the nation, along with the 11th highest smoking rate.

Supporters of Prop B say the tax would change both of those numbers drastically.
