Ameren offers tips on preventing copper theft

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - According to Ameren, thieves are risking their lives and the lives of innocent people to steal copper and other metals with a high global price.

Ameren says copper thefts can cause extensive power outages and fires that could injure or kill innocent people. Not only has copper been stolen from Ameren utility facilities but thieves have targeted copper wire and pipes at businesses, private homes and apartments.

Ameren offers these tips as the best line of defense against copper theft:

  • If you have information about a copper theft, report it immediately
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity around Ameren utility electric substations or other utility facilities
  • When away from home, make sure your house and outbuildings are securely locked. If you are gone for an extended period of time, notify police and have a trusted friend or neighbor watch your property.

Treasurer Zweifel awards $626,000 in loans to agribusiness, farmer

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced Tuesday he awarded $626,000 in low-interest loans to a Butler county agribusiness and a Cape Girardeau County farmer.

The Batesville Grain and Fertilizer in Broseley, Mo. and a farm owned by Stanley Sievers in Jackson, Mo. received the loans from the Missouri Linked Deposit Program.

The $576,000 loan for the agribusiness will save it an estimated $22,000 in interest costs over the next two years, according to the office of the Treasurer. The business said it will be using the loan to build a new fertilizer house, upgrade the current facility and operating capital.

Sievers will get a $50,000 loan that will save him an estimated $1,000 in interest costs over the next year.

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Department of Agriculture have agreed to let heavier than normal loads of farm products from flooded areas be transported to safer storage.

According to MoDOT, many farmers have grain and livestock in areas threatened by rising floodwater and possible levee breaches.

"In light of recent heavy rainfall and high river levels, we want to give producers every opportunity to move livestock, supplies and equipment to higher ground," said Director of Agriculture Dr.

Poplar Bluff License Bureau moves to Three Rivers Boulevard

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The License Bureau in Poplar Bluff will move soon from the Pear Tree Inn to Three Rivers Boulevard.

The office will be closed June 16 through 19 to prepare for the re-opening at the new location on June 20.

The bureau will re-open at 2509 Three Rivers Boulevard, the second building behind Fazoli's. Regular operating hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 to 12 p.m. on the first and last Saturdays of the month.

Water testing kits available at Butler Co. Health Dept.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Butler County Health Department has water test kits available to flood victims for free.

The health department says it is important to test well water, especially if it could have become contaminated by flood water.

The kits must be picked up at the health department office located at 1619 North Main Street in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Normally the tests cost $10 but the fee is being waived clients affected by the flooding.

$100,000 media grant awarded to Southeast Mo. Food Bank

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Food Bank was awarded a $100,000 Advertising for a Cause grant by the Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals.

The grant was established to provide advertising assistance, production and media placement for regional public service organizations.

The entire food bank service area, including 16 counties, has been affected by the recent flooding of the Mississippi River. Three of those counties, New Madrid; Mississippi and Butler were declared national disaster areas. The Southeast Missouri Food Bank responded by shipping thousands of pounds of supplies to local emergency responders and hunger relief agencies.

Ten regional media companies donated their production and placement services to fund the grant.

MoDOT schedules community briefings

MISSOURI (KFVS) - MoDOT has scheduled seven community briefings in the next month to present the department's Bolder Five-Year Direction to local officials and residents.

"The plan presented will change the way we do business, the way we look and allow us to do more with the funds that we have," said Mark Shelton, MoDOT's Southeast district engineer. "Our primary focus will be to maintain the current system with a decreased staff."

The briefings will give the public an opportunity to comment on the plan. All meetings will be held from 4 p.m.
