Poplar Bluff elementary students rewarded for good habits | Schools
POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - School officials say the Good Habits Store is having a positive impact at Lake Road Elementary School in Poplar Bluff.
Students were sent on their monthly shopping spree on October 9.
According to Poplar Bluff R-1 Schools, the Good Habits Store is an incentive program where students can earn reward points that can be spent on toys at a makeshift store set up in the gymnasium.
The program was started by the civic organization during the 2012-13 school year to complement the new theme, Lake Road ROCKS (respectful, outstanding, cooperative, kind and safe).
The school says the Boys and Girls Club also added a Power Hour after school tutoring site at Lake Road last school year.
School officials say Lake Road received statewide recognition for successful adoption and implementation of School-wide Positive Behavior Support. It's an intervention system Lake Road Elementary educators began training for in 2011/12, a year after Principal Erica Weadon took the helm.
The school provided the following statistics: since the 2010-11 school year:
- Disciplinary referrals at Lake Road have been cut in half, according to data provided to Rotarians.
- Attendance is tracking less than a percentage under emerging Missouri Learning Standards.
- The school says ninety-percent of students are in class 90 percent of the time.
- Missouri Assessment Program scores from the springtime were higher than the state average overall as well as in subgroups in math, while communication arts scores were better than the state in subgroups and almost on par overall.
