4 Poplar Bluff H.S. graduates receive associates degrees

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - On Thursday, May 9, Three Rivers College Dean of Academic Instruction, Dr. Mary Lou Brown, presented Adrienne Burfield, Zachary Miller, Vicky Bottorff and Shallyn Ward of the Poplar Bluff High School Class of 2013 with associate degrees from the community college for completing the College Now dual credit program.

PBHS graduates largest class in more than 30 years

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  On Thursday, May 9, at the Black River Coliseum, 322 students of the Class of 2013 graduated from Poplar Bluff High School.

That is the highest number of graduating students since 1981, bringing the grand total of R-I alumni to more than 21,500, according to school records.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Michael Caldwell, an alumnus of the PBHS Class of 1978.

He offered some words of inspiration to the graduates, ending on a lighthearted note, putting on a prop hat while quoting “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss.

 An estimated 3,000 were in attendance during the commencement.

2 artists win Three Rivers student art show

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Three Rivers fine arts students competed this week in the annual Fine Arts Student Show.

The show featured student-created artwork in multiple mediums.

Matthew Roberts of Stafford, Missouri, won best in show for his untitled work.

Second place was given to Tim Edmundson of Poplar Bluff for his work “Evil Beauty.”

Cape Central's Vinson to attend Three Rivers on athletic scholarship

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Cape Central basketball player Chelsea Vinson will attend Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff on an athletic scholarship.

“Chelsea is a tremendous asset to her team,” said Cape Central Head Coach Sherri Shirrell.

Vinson had earned the following awards in her junior year: All-Conference 1st team, All-District 1st team, All-tourney team for St. Francis Holiday Classic, Tiger Teammate (team voted),  MVP (team voted), TOP FT%, Top Scorer and Top Rebounder. 

“We’re wishing her the best of luck at Three Rivers,” Coach Shirrell concluded.

Poplar Bluff Schools speech teachers recognized

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

In accordance, the Poplar Bluff R - I school district has chosen this month to recognize it's speech teachers.

The team of speech-language pathologists at Poplar Bluff Schools play a crucial role in helping the district reach its mission: Achieving excellence through learning: every child, every hour, every day.

This year, Donna Baller of the 5th & 6th Grade Center was named Middle School Grade Span Teacher of the Year.

The previous school year, Judy Seawel of the Kindergarten Center was named District Teacher of the Year.

Phi Theta Kappa donates clothing to women's shelter

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -  A greek organization at Three Rivers Community College donated clothing to the local women's shelter.

Phi Theta Kappa donated clothing to to Haven House, Inc., in Poplar Bluff.

Haven House, Inc., is one of the organizations that receive donations from the Summer Clothes Drive sponsored by the Three Rivers chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Clothes were also donated to the Ozark Family Resource Agency in Doniphan.

Poplar Bluff student awarded competitive honors program scholarship

Poplar Bluff student awarded competitive honors program scholarship

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Adrienne Burfield of the Poplar Bluff High School Class of 2013 has been awarded a $15,000 annually renewable scholarship in the University of Alabama - Birmingham Honors Program, where she plans to pursue her professional degree in medicine so she can enter the pediatric care field.

Burfield, 18, will graduate high school with 74 credit hours from Three Rivers College, having maintained a 4.0 GPA at the secondary and higher education institutions, respectively.

In December, she was the first student to complete her associate degree requirements through College Now, a dual credit program between the community college and PBHS.

On top of the necessary 62 credits, Burfield opted to continue to take college courses this spring semester.
